The first time I went to the races at Saratoga (I live in Albany) I hit an exacta starring Angel Corderro Jr. and Julie Krone for a buck-twenty. These days, instead of going to OTB, I bet the ponies online. That's the gambling side.
I got married on May 6, 2006 - the day Barbaro pulled away from the field in the Kentucky Derby. I've got pictures of me holding losing tickets in my hand just before the race went off. Me and Barbaro were both champs that day. That's the sentimental side.
I didn't bet a penny on Barbaro. But it still bothers me that he died, especially since I unequivocally believe that he would've won the Triple Crown that year. We have a painting of Barbaro in our bedroom and it's my favorite painting. That's the animal-lover side.
Last year I took a stance on polytrack. I absolutely support it and believe it should be mandated at all non-Triple Crown tracks in New York State. I also laugh at anyone that's vehemently against polytrack. You can read about it at the
New York State Polytrack Initiative. That's the activist side.
